Here is a SAMPLE of the beginning Step #2 toward getting IRP Plates and starting your own trucking company. [Buy the IRP Module of the Toolkit for details on all the Steps.] The hyperlinks lead you to the proper websites to get the information you need. Point-and-click -- It's a cinch!
Step #2 - IRP PLATES If you do not already have them, get International Registration Plan (IRP) apportioned (this means miles and fees divided among 2 or more states) license plates for your trucks. The International Registration Plan is a registration reciprocity agreement among states of the United States and provinces of Canada providing for payment of license fees based on fleet miles operated in various jurisdictions. There is no federal license plate. However, all interstate and some intrastate motor vehicles over 26,000 pounds must be apportioned and show an IRP plate. You can apportion some smaller vehicles, also, if you want to do so. Check with your state’s requirements. You will need a copy of your paid 2290 and proof of insurance in order to get your plates. Satisfy this proof of insurance with the insurance company’s cab card showing your Liability Insurance Policy number, effective dates, and issued to your specific vehicle. Follow the hyperlinks for information on your base state’s specific requirements, and for approximate costs. Your IRP plate gives you permission to drive on the highways of the states that you have apportioned. NOTE: some states have restrictions for particular roads based on truck weight, width, and/or length. KY, NM, NY, and OR also have special weight-distance permit requirements. [See separate section of The Safety Compliance Toolkit for those individual state requirements, costs, and hyperlinks to obtain the weight-distance permits online.] Check with individual states if you have questions.
For those states not apportioned, you will need to purchase temporary permits....
